Still Time to Catch Marvel’s Guardians of the Galaxy

Guardians of the Galaxy

As we are approaching a new school year, please do not miss the greatest summer blockbuster hit of 2014. For the novice Marvel enthusiast, Guardians of the Galaxy is in the same universe as the Avengers team. You can still catch it in theaters, but don’t wait too long! We are all familiar with Iron Man, Captain America, Thor, and the Hulk, but when Marvel announced that they would be making a movie based on one of their lesser known comic books of the same title, there was a wave of concern. People were unsure if this space travel rag-tag team would appeal to major movie going audiences. Guardians of the Galaxy beat out all of the skeptics, and managed to pull together a fantastic infusion of its uniquely branded humor and visual spectacle.

The story begins with Peter Quill, played by the hilarious Chris Pratt known for his role as Andy Dwyer on NBC’s Parks and Recreation. Peter was born on earth, but was abducted by alien treasure hunters on the night of his mother’s death. He joins their ranks and dons the alias Star Lord. In his travels he comes across a powerful orb which leads many different groups to pursue him. Ronan the destroyer seeks the orb to control the galaxy, and sends Gamora (Zoe Saldana) after Peter to retrieve the orb. Her efforts are foiled when bounty hunter Rocket a genetically modified raccoon and his tree-like henchman Groot (Vin Diesel) obtain Peter for a reward. They all wind up in prison. They decide to join forces along with Drax the Destroyer to escape prison, and to prevent the orb from reaching the wrong hands.

Guardians of the Galaxy is thoroughly enjoyable. It is a refreshing break from marvel’s usual strain of super hero movies. Their decision to expand their cinematic universe turned out to be very savvy as this film definitely exceeds expectation. I loved this film, and even if you’re not a fan of science fiction or super hero movies, I promise you will appreciate this movies unique and quirky humor.
