I am always amazed when I visit San Francisco because I feel like I learn about new things and attractions everytime I go! Here I live just 2 hours from San Francisco and up until a few weeks ago, I had no idea the Walt Disney Family Museum was located there! As part of my all-expense paid trip with Disney, I had the privilege of touring the museum. This was definitely a cool museum to peruse, especially if you are a Disney fan at all.
The Disney Family Museum is located in The Presidio of San Francisco, with amazing views of the Golden Gate Bridge. The 40,000 square foot brick building, once a barracks, features the newest technology and historic materials and artifacts to bring Disney’s achievements to life.
Through interactive galleries that include displays, animation, drawings, listening stations and more, you will learn so much about the creation of each Disney character. I loved the display case of several Mickey Mouse artifacts that have been created and collected over the years!
One of the things that fascinated most about the museum were all of the Disney character sketches. I loved learning about some of the processes of bringing the beloved characters to life. The minds of creative people really intrigues me. Seeing all of these sketches of Pinocchio from a different angle or facial expression is so cool!
Of course, we learned about the life of the famous Walt Disney. He was quite the extraordinary man with grandiose visions, and also never gave up! He had so much perseverance and had a determination to make his dreams happen, as you all know! Walt was lucky to have the support of his brother Roy. They pooled their money together and set up a cartoon studio in Hollywood, where Walt distributed his Alice Comedies. Learning about all of the things this man accomplished is just mind boggling. Then of course there is Disneyland…
The Walt Disney Family Museum had a miniature of California’s Disneyland. It may be difficult to tell but this miniature is laid out just like Disneyland, with all of the rides and attractions. I just love seeing the miniature form of things! It’s obvious but crazy to think that the life-size rides and attractions we all know, started as a vision and a miniature first.
This photo of a globe with Mickey’s face, crying, is probably one of my favorites from the museum. Toward the end of the tour/museum, we came upon a wall full of beautiful artwork that people all over the world sent in, in honor of Walt’s passing. I love this depiction of the world mourning for the loss of such a phenomenal man.
I learned so much and had a great time touring the Walt Disney Museum. I think it’s a museum I could go back to and learn even more. The atmosphere is fantastic as well. If you ever get to spend some time in SF, be sure to check it out!
