I figured it was about time I pick up where I left off with my California Travel that I completed with my family this summer. I last wrote about our visit to San Jose and Carmel, which you can read about in my travel section.
After we left Carmel, we drove down the California coast to Cambria, where I was provided a night’s stay at the Best Western Fireside Inn. Before I talk about our lovely accommodations and the beautiful town, I thought I’d touch on some of the beautiful scenes we saw on our drive down. For once in my life I was excited for road work on the highway, because that gave me some time to step outside and take pictures of the breathtaking views that were outside of our car.
The California coast boasts rocky hillsides and beautiful ocean views and sunsets. There were several pull-out spots for cars to pull over and take in the scenery, which certainly made me happy. The drive from Carmel to Cambria wasn’t too terribly long, and I can’t tell you how many times I oohed and awed over the things I saw and heard outside my car window. One of the times we stopped, the second I stepped out of my car I could hear several seals barking away, from way below. I could hardly see them, but it was amazing how loud they were!
Then just 10-15 minutes north of our hotel in Cambria, we came across a lookout of a beach with more elephant seals than I have ever seen! Despite the terrible wind, they were so fun to watch!
Once we got to Cambria, we were welcomed by the Fireside Inn staff, and a lovely room. I fell in love with the pillows and crisp linens at this hotel! Slept like a rock, which is a bonus while traveling! The staff was gracious enough to stick a couple of rollaway beds in our room so that everyone could sleep comfortably. Because of the cool ocean breeze in the evenings, it was a treat to have a fireplace in our room. Did I mention the view from this hotel??? The hotel sits directly across the street from the ocean, with nothing blocking your view.
We enjoyed some tasty Italian food in Cambria and came back to the hotel for a walk down to the water, as well as the cliffs. We just had to do it at sunset of course! The kids had a blast climbing on all of the rocks and seeing what treasures they could find. I was disappointed that we didn’t have time to go down to the tide pools in the morning, because they sometimes have tons of seals and starfish that greet you.
After our wonderful night’s rest, we enjoyed a tasty breakfast buffet and headed off to the Hearst Castle; just 5-10 minutes north of our hotel. Cambria was the perfect stop from Northern California to Southern California, and with our own patio to walk to the beach, the Fireside Inn was just right! The town was very peaceful, as was the hotel and scenery. It was like a little space in heaven!
