My ten year old son has always hated reading, and I’m not saying that lightly. For years I have struggled to get him to even glance at a book, until the Diary of a Wimpy Kid series entered my home. Now, He has been obsessed with the series and can’t stop reading! I must say, it has been nice to see him get lost in the pages of a book.
I was going to read the newest book in the series, The Diary of a Wimpy Kid: Hard Luck, but I couldn’t seem to pry it out of his hands! Even though I couldn’t read the book my son was telling me all about how much he loved it. The book takes place over the time span of two months and it explains Greg’s (the main character) trials as he watches his best friend (Rowley) lose all freedom to a girl. In the previous book, Rowley had just gotten a girlfriend and in this book his girlfriend has gotten to the point where she does not let him hang out with Greg anymore. Now Greg doesn’t have his best buddy to walk to school with, eat lunch with, or have sleepovers with. How was he going to make it through the rest of the year at middle school? He then resorts to hanging out with Fregley (the school freak). By the end of the book things get sorted out and Greg has his best friend back with a lesson learned: It’s not good to use people to your advantage.
I must give the author, Jeff Kinney, some props. He really knows how to write books for children ages 8-12+. In addition to praise from his readers he won a Children’s Choice Book Award in 2012, along with Nickelodeon’s Kids’ Choice Award for a book series three years in a row, and is nominated for this year as well. I am very impressed! I never thought that my son would ever take interest in reading, but Kinney has done it; he wrote a book that children who hate reading enjoy! My son loves this book, along with the series, and if he loves it, I’m sure many others will too! So, if you are looking for a good book (or series) to gift the young minds in your life, check out Diary of a Wimpy Kid on Amazon.
