Every year I help host a Christmas party for my friends and our spouses. We look forward to it each year because it is such a fun night without kids, with fantastic food and tons of laughs. The party is next week and I have been pondering what to bring. I typically like to bring something sweet and something salty/savory. Perhaps it’s my indecisiveness, or just my love for all types of foods.
Rather than throw something together last minute, as I often have to do, I decided to take a recipe for a test run. I know that many of my friends are trying to watch their “figure” so I wanted to come up with something tasty and low in fat. Sounds reasonable right? I headed to Walmart and picked up a can of Skipjack Chunk Tuna by Ocean Naturals. I’m definitely an “in water” kind of gal. We don’t be needin’ the extra oil! Ocean Naturals tuna is one that I think we can feel good about eating, which will make my girlfriends happy.
Some things to help you feel good about Ocean Naturals tuna:
- The promise to use only wild, responsibly-caught seafood
- Uses catch-methods that limit ecosystem impacts
- From target species populations that are healthy and abundant and are currently being harvested at a level that promotes the stocks’ longevity
- Caught in areas where conservation measures to help prevent overfishing from occurring.
- Fish caught without the aid of fish aggregating devices
- high-quality protein and Omega 3 fatty acids
You can also learn more about where your specific tuna came from by visiting Ocean Naturals and entering the code on the can. My kids particularly find this feature fun!
With the perfect tuna in hand, I needed an equally perfect recipe. Enter the Tuna Melt Crostini. I have always been a lover of a good tuna melt. There really are so many different ingredients you can add to make a tasty tuna melt. Because I will be serving up party food, I thought a finger food would be appropriate, so I went with a Tuna Melt Crostini. Just the right size for snacking.
Pairing Ocean Naturals Tuna with fresh oregano and tomato, with just a touch of light mayo and mozzarella cheese really made for some delicious tuna melts. When using a baguette, the size is just right too! You will also love how quickly these tuna melts come together!
- 1 can Skipjack Ocean Naturals Tuna
- 1 Tbs mayonnaise
- 2 tsp fresh oregano
- 1/4 cup shredded mozzarella cheese, divided
- 1 roma tomato, sliced
- 1/2 baguette, sliced into 6 equal pieces
- salt and pepper
- Turn oven onto Broil.
- In a small bowl combined tuna, mayonnaise, oregano and 2 Tbs mozzarella cheese. Mix and top baguette slices with equal portions of tuna mixture.
- Sprinkle salt and pepper over tuna and top with a slice of tomato and a little mozzarella.
- Place crostini on a baking sheet and stick under the broiler for 3-5 minutes, until cheese is melted.
