Tips for a Healthy Holiday

My family and I were recently planning our Christmas Eve celebration and were reminiscing about what we did last Christmas Eve. It was such a “magical” night filled with excitement, laughter and… oh that’s right… a late night bout with the stomach flu. Let me tell you, that did not make for a happy holiday.

This year I am determined not to let cold and flu season enter our holiday celebrations. While I realistically understand that there is nothing that I can do to completely prevent us from getting sick over the holidays, there are a lot of great things that I can do to help lower our risk. Here are a few of the things that I have been doing to help my family have a happy, healthy, holiday:

  • Wash Up: We all know that washing our hands often is one of the best ways to keep germs away. So to encourage extra hand-washing I have gotten a few fun holiday scented soap dispensers for all of my sinks. I also got a nice bottle of hand sanitizer to place near the buffet table for a few holiday parties that I will be having at my home.

  • Eat Healthy: I once heard that one of the reasons people tend to get sick around the holidays is because they are less likely to be eating healthy foods. This holiday I am trying to resist the temptation to snack on those Christmas Cookies by having a big bowl of mandarin oranges out on my counter. They are packed with Vitamin C that will help me and my family keep our immune systems strong and fighting off germs.

  • Disinfect Surfaces– While I love to welcome my home to guests over the holidays, germs are not invited to hang out at my parties. Because germs love to lurk on counters and other hard surfaces, I try to wipe them down often with a disinfecting spray. I like to do this as part of my daily cleaning routine, with special attention to the counter before and after meals.
  • Cleaner Air-As someone who suffers from allergies and asthma, I know first hand just how important it is to have fewer airborne particles and dust in the home. When I am congested from allergies I get less sleep, and feel over all less healthy, making it seem like I am more susceptible to catching the cold or flu in addition to the breathing trouble. To help capture airborne particles I recently installed the Filtrete Healthy Living Ultimate Allergen Reduction Filter (MPR 1900) in my home. This is just one of the things you can do to help create a cleaner, fresher and healthier home because it attracts and captures airborne particles that can carry bacteria and viruses from the air passing through the filter. With these tips and a little preventative efforts I hope that this year the holidays will find you healthy and happy the whole season through!
