The drought in California is no joke. Each year has gotten progressively worse, to where we now have water restrictions in each county. We can actually be fined if we use more water than we’ve been allotted. We are allowed to run our sprinklers twice a week, and on specific assigned days. I even have friends who have received notices from the city, with photographs of water run-off on their property, and a warning. This is serious business. With the help of Scotts® brand, I’ve come up with some tips to conserve water, all while helping your home not “feel” the drought so much.
- While your shower is heating up in the morning (or night), place a bucket under the shower head, to catch the unused water. Then use said water to flush the toilet or water the garden.
- Scrape dishes into the garbage, instead of rinsing. This can save your garbage disposal and future clogs, as well as water.
- Place ice cubes in the soil of flower pots, instead of holding a hose over them and risking leakage. This works in hanging baskets as well.
- Run your dishwasher and washing machine only when they are full.
- Don’t cook/boil food in more water than absolutely necessary. Then perhaps use the remaining water for a soup or stew.
- Use products like Scotts® brand new EveryDrop™ line, to save your lawn and conserve water at the same time. This product is designed to move more water into the soil whether you water with sprinklers or by rain. After all, well-fed lawns and plants are more efficient at using available water, so make sure your yard is well-fed!
Now that you have some tips for conserving water around the house, here are just a few more tips for your yard, from Scotts® brand. These tips will ultimately help get your yard looking great, too:
- Morning is Best: If you must water, morning is best. Water evaporates in the afternoon before plants can use it and can cause fungus or other diseases in the evening
- Mow High: Grass three or four inches long has deep roots to access underground moisture, reducing the need for surface watering
- Mulch Planting Beds: Mulch reduces evaporation and helps retain rainwater
- Adjust Sprinklers: Avoid watering the sidewalk and driveway
- Check for Leaks: Outdoor faucets, sprinklers and hoses can crack and leak
- Avoid the Wind: Watering on windy days can spray much more than your lawn and garden
Let’s hear your tips for water conservation!
