As a Pinterest regular, I have noticed many varieties of Moscow Mules. Being the non-alcohol drinker I am, I first had to do some research about what a mule is other than a backless shoe or pack animal. I found out these popular drinks are named for the Moscow Mule, and because they look adorable I was prompted to create a Spring Moscow Mule Mocktail, with a little spring twist for added flavor.
The classic Moscow Mule recipe is a vodka-based cocktail with the unusual addition of ginger beer, topped with a wedge of lime. It was popularized mid-20th century following World War II when vodka was still relatively unknown outside Russia and Central Europe. And it really became popular in California with the Hollywood crowd. It’s been losing popularity in recent years, but I have a feeling it will become hugely popular again with the awesome copper mugs I’ve seen everywhere lately.
Whenever a cocktail becomes popular, there’s a demand for a non-alcoholic version for non-drinkers to enjoy.
Ginger beer and vodka are the main ingredients, so I just substituted club soda in place of the vodka. You still add the slice of lime, and any other additions you think would add a fun flair. My kiddos have been begging to use the copper mugs since I brought them home, so we’ll be having Moscow Mules – virgin style – very soon.
