Celebrate National Friendship Day Like Victoria & Abdul

Over the past week or so, Keith and I have been talking a lot about friendship and what it means to have good friends. I for one like to think of Keith as my best friend, because what better way to have a great marriage than to be married to your best friend? We’ve also discussed why it’s important for me to have some good girlfriends, and him some reliable guy friends he can count on. There’s an unlikely friendship many of you may not know about, and that’s Victoria & Abdul.

Victoria & Abdul is one of Focus Features newest films, to be released on September 22nd, and it’s not to be missed! This is the extraordinary true story of Queen Victoria, in her later years, becoming great friends with a young Indian clerk.

“When Abdul Karim (Ali Fazal), a young clerk, travels from India to participate in the Queen’s Golden Jubilee, he is surprised to find favor with the Queen herself. As the Queen questions the constrictions of her long-held position, the two forge an unlikely and devoted alliance with a loyalty to one another that her household and inner circle all attempt to destroy. As the friendship deepens, the Queen begins to see a changing world through new eyes and joyfully reclaims her humanity.”

As you’ll see in the trailer, Queen Victoria and Ali have such a beautiful friendship where they both learn from each other, and care for each other. I believe the best friendships are ones where we are willing to learn from each other and strive to be better because of that friendship.

In talking with a new girlfriend last night, we both agreed that developing a close friendship often takes time, but it’s so worth it. It’s wonderful to have a circle of people you can trust, count on, and who won’t judge you for your shortcomings. I have a couple of people from my adulthood that I know I can turn to in a time of need, but unfortunately they just don’t live quite close enough! I moved last year, and I’m in the process of building new close friendships. They’re on the horizon, but for now I have my hubby, and he’s one heck of a friend!

I hope your Sunday is filled with friendship, love and laughter, in honor of National Friendship Day! Then on September 22nd, take your best friend and go see Victoria & Abdul – it looks amazing!
