Every year, my kids get so excited for December 1st to roll around, because that means it’s time to start our advent calendar. We have had a variety of different types of advent calendars over the years, but we try to always do one. A couple of years ago, my brother and his wife gave us a very neat advent calendar, that we hang on the wall. It has pockets that we can fill with goodies, messages, activities and more.
This year, we can all participate in an online advent calendar, courtesy of Noomii.com. This calendar provokes the thought that it is better to give than to receive. I think this is such a cool idea, because what we will be able to do is interact with the online calendar by participating in acts of service on a daily basis.
When you subscribe, you will be sent a daily act of kindness, each day through December 25th. This is fantastic because sometimes we run out of ideas of something we can do. It doesn’t have to take money to perform an act of kindness! I truly believe that blessings are received, by you and the person you serve. I talk to my kids about serving others throughout the year, but we especially push this during the holidays. I try to get my kids to focus on the real meaning of Christmas, and not just the presents. One of the ways we do this is by doing random acts of kindness for others. We often pick people that we think might be lonely, and leave something on their doorstep. It could be a homemade treat, a pair of warm socks, a movie and popcorn, etc.
I think this online advent calendar will be a great way to help give everyone the boost and reminder they need, to to get fully immersed in the holiday spirit.
