Is winter weather putting some brrrrr in your purr? If so, I, Fudgie, am here with some winter survival tips! If you haven’t read my first blog in this series A Cat’s Guide to Owning a Family, be sure to check that out too!

Fudgie the Cat

Today I’m talking about the most abominable time of year for a cat…winter. Jack Frost nipping at my soft, wet nose is not my idea of fun. Here at my home in Northern California we are having a pretty warm winter (my time spent practicing to control the elements is finally paying off). However, for those not as talented as myself, I have put together a few simple tips for battling the weather.

1. (Because it is the most important) STAY INSIDE! A cat has no business getting her feet cold and muddy by venturing into less then favorable conditions. I recommend finding yourself a comfortable spot on one of the beds that the humans claim as their own, and parking yourself there till spring. After all, if a silly groundhog is smart enough to run back into its home after feeling this cold weather, surely a sophisticated being as ourselves can do the same.

2. Get some fresh air- staying inside all winter long can make you feel a little cooped up. To prevent this from happening it’s important to get some fresh air every few hours. In keeping in the spirit of rule # 1, you must find a way to do this from the comfort of your home. I have the solution for you. Simply sit and wait near the proximity of the back door. The humans will assume that you want to venture outside and will rush to open the door to cater to this need. Once the door is opened, take a few deep cleansing breaths from the inside side of the door. If you have trained your humans as well as I have, they may even coach your breathing techniques by saying “In or out… In or out Fudgie.” It’s very considerate of them! After getting refreshing wafts of air, quickly return to the comfort of your bed. Repeat several times throughout the day.

3. Get plenty to eat- There is a reason why they call it “cozy winter comfort food”. Be sure to eat up to keep up your strength for this abominable time of year. If your humans do not realize this you may have to give them some subtle reminders such as rubbing up against their legs or standing directly in their walking path until they get the hint and feed you.

4. Defense Tactics- If by some terrible twist of fate you find yourself behind enemy lines (outside in the elements) for a few minutes you will need to practice some defense tactics to ward off the winter weather. Firstly, stay low to the ground! Keep your tail low and ears pointed downwards and slowly move your body in a crouched crawl. This will disguise you from the enemy (winter weather). Next be sure to avoid any mud or puddles. These will cause your paws to get wet and your only option will be to jump on the front of your human’s parked car to dry them off. Lastly, make your way back to the safety of your base (inside the house) as quickly as possible. Good luck solider!

5- Convince your humans to invest in some high quality cat litter- To abide by rule # 1, you will find the need to conduct most of your “business” from your home office (aka cat litter box). To make this the comfortable experience that us cats expect, you will want to make sure that your humans purchase some high quality, odor absorbing litter. I personally recommend Fresh Step Extreme Odor Control Scoopable Litter. As you know from my previous post, I am a big fan of Fresh Step litter, but their new “Extreme” formula with CarbonPLUS odor neutralizer really takes the cake! It has antimicrobial agents that help stop the growth of odor causing bacteria on contact with urine. It also has clumping clay to make it easy for your humans to keep your “office space” clean.

If your humans are being hesitant to switch to new Fresh Step Extreme Odor Control Scoopable Cat Litter, just try this simple trick. Make the stinkiest smell you can come up with in your litter box (you know the type I’m talking about). For added effect, make sure to time it right as they have visitors coming over. They will soon realize that the latest Fresh Step Formula is the only litter equipped to handle that kind of stench! #freshstepextreme

If you can manage it, try and get your human to come and read this post (I know they can be difficult creatures to train sometimes) because one lucky human will win 5 Fresh Step Cat Litter coupons. Each coupon is valid for a free box of your favorite variety of Fresh Step Litter (up to $9 value each). That’s a lot of money that could be saved and used towards catnip!

Well good luck my fellow cats! Winter is a formidable time for us, but with my useful tips and some Fresh Step Extreme Odor Control Scoopable Cat Litter, we may all just make it through till spring!

  • I want to see if it really works because during the summer months we have really hot weather and I try to keep the cats inside as much as possible.

  • I love fresh step. I would like to win this for my daughter. She buys the really cheap stuff and the smell is pretty bad. I want her to smell the difference and hopefully she will start using fresh step.

  • The litter we use doesn’t control odor very well. I would like to give this one a try.

  • We have a constant supply of air fresheners because our litter doesn’t hold the odor very well. I want to try this and see if it is any better.
