I hadn’t really watched Dora the Explorer until watching Dora’s Fantastic Gymnastics Adventure, with CleverHousewife’s kids. At first I was a bit iffy, having heard some rather off putting remarks about Dora, but as I saw her little girl get into it I thought that it might not be so bad after all. It was fun as well to watch her boys get into it. While in the beginning they had been laughing and giggling at giving the wrong answers to Dora’s questions (though that wasn’t a bad thing from my point of view since they had at least been entertained). By the end of the first episode one of her son’s was visibly mesmerized and watching intently.
The contents of the episodes in this DVD were honestly better than I had expected them to be. The songs were catchy, especially the “Fantastic Gymnastics” song in the first episode. CleverHousewife’s little girl started to sing along with it toward the end. The episodes were also educational, and not only because they had some Spanish for the kids to pick up on. The first episode taught about gymnastics, showing things like cartwheels and a gym; not to mention that Dora wore a leotard. My favorite lesson had to be in the last episode though. In “Swiper’s Favorite Things” Swiper loses his prized possessions while packing to visit his Grandma. The reason this was my favorite was because I feel like sometimes kids get stuck in the “good guy, bad guy” mentality; where someone is either good or evil. It was cool to see Dora helping out Swiper, teaching kids that it’s alright to be nice and help anyone; even if they’ve been mean to you before.
