Real Steel Movie Review + Giveaway + Phone Interview with Dakota Goyo

I’ve got a lot for you, wrapped into one post! The movie “Real Steel” comes out to theaters everywhere tomorrow. I truly think this movie needs to be on your must-see list.

I went to a pre-screening of the movie on Tuesday with my 7 year old son. I was hesitant to take him since the movie is PG-13. I am usually pretty conservative about what movies I let my children see. You really need to use your judgment on this because there is definitely fighting (robots and one human fight scene), which is to be expected, but there is also some language. The F-word is never used, which really pleased me. Overall, I think my 7 year old handled the movie well, but I wouldn’t take my younger children – he was just old enough. Keep in mind that the movie is very loud because after all, there are metal robots who box! Doesn’t bother me a bit though! I just wanted to get this info out to you right away because I have had several of you ask me if this movie is appropriate for your children.

Now onto what I thought about Real Steel. I can tell you that your kids will definitely enjoy this movie, especially if they are into the Rock’em Sock’em Robot type thing. This movie really has it all. I thoroughly enjoyed this film on many levels. There is a little romance, fighting, father-son relationship, and I even laughed some.

Hugh Jackman is so fun to watch, especially toward the end of the movie when you get to see him do some serious boxing, and see his relationship with his son come around. Hugh Jackman’s relationship with Evangeline Lilly is somethin’ else. Evangeline Lilly doesn’t have a huge role in the movie, but I absolutely love the role she plays. I don’t want to spoil anything, so you’re just going to have to take my word for it that you’ve got to see Real Steel! It is truly a joy to see.

Now Dakota Goyo; he plays the boy in the movie, and he is absolutely amazing. He does a fantastic job and is quite endearing Dakota pulls off the role very well, and he even does a little dancing with the robots, in the movie, that I absolutely loved. I was lucky enough to get in on a phone interview with Dakota yesterday, and wanted to share a bit of it with you. Dakota’s answers were so mature and he was so down to earth – a joy to talk with.

Dakota has a regular role on the kids shows, Arthur and Super Why. I asked him if he prefers feature films to voice roles and he seems to prefer feature films. He said he does enjoy voice overs, but it is more difficult because you are acting in a room by yourself. He enjoys getting to work with other actors.

There is some dancing of Dakota and the robots in the film, which was one of my favorite parts. When asked if he already knew how to dance, Dakota said no. He had a choreographer work with him and show him the moves and he didn’t know he could dance before.

Dakota worked 9.5 hours per day for 72 days straight, on this film. I can’t even imagine working that much, as a 12 year old kid. He did get some weekends off.

Someone asked Dakota how his friends respond to his career and Dakota is very thankful that his friends keep his career out of their friendship. The fact that his friends can do this, helps him to know they are a true friend.

Dakota’s favorite subjects in school are gym and art, but if he had to choose a “real subject” he would choose science because he enjoys the labs.

There is a scene in the movie where Dakota is crying. We wanted to know what his inspiration was for the crying scene(s). Dakota says he likes to meditate before he is called to cry in a scene. He tries to think of something calming beforehand.

Dakota got to see Real Steel 2 times before it was finished, but the 3rd time was at the London Premiere, and it was finally complete. He loved seeing the robots and action come together as a whole.

In Dakota’s spare time he enjoys riding to the convenient store or just walking around with friends. He also enjoys a lot of sports such as golf and football.

Like I said, Dakota was a joy to talk to. He was very mature in his responses, yet he sounded just like any other 12 year old boy, with a soft voice. He goes to school just like every other kid and likes to live a “normal” life when he can.

I hope you all plan on seeing the movie because it was truly awesome! Before I post the giveaway, be sure to check out this new trailer for the movie: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=pShDn5bD3BA
