SIMPLE Service Project with GE Lighting for Champions for Kids
I feel so fortunate to have been able to participate in so many service projects in the past couple of weeks. I was invited to take part in another project for Champions for Kids, regarding GE Lighting. The lightbulbs from my donation were provided by GE Lighting. I think it is so fantastic when big brands get passionate about a cause, and get involved.
Last week, I took the challenge of replacing my industrial pendant lighting with GE Energy Smart light bulbs, and compared the savings. With just 6 light bulbs, I can save over $50 per year! I love that the front of so many light bulb boxes have your estimated yearly cost for one of the bulbs inside that particular box.
To help a local shelter out, where abused women and children go for refuge, I was sent a GE Lighting coupon for a free box of light bulbs, up to $20. I headed to Walmart to see if I could get the most bang for my buck and I was able to come away with a box of 6 GE Energy Smart bulbs. Not only am I able to help this shelter save on a purchase of light bulbs, but because these bulbs are indeed Energy Smart, this is a gift that will keep on giving. The energy bills at this shelter will be lower than they may have been, for time to come. To top it off, these bulbs actually last longer than other light bulbs, which results in having to purchase light bulbs even less often!
To encourage others to pay it forward, GE sent me a second coupon for $20 worth of light bulbs. This coupon isn’t for me to use for myself, but to give to someone else the opportunity to give back to their community, or someone in need. I opened this offer up to all of my readers on facebook and twitter. I asked who YOU, my readers, have in mind as far as a shelter or children’s organization, that could benefit from this type of organization. I got a few responses, but promised the coupon to the first reader to respond. Mary, a reader, responded right away with the idea of a battered women’s shelter in mind. She anticipates receiving her coupon and making the GE Lighting purchase and donating the light bulbs to “Circle of Hope” in her area. I can’t wait to hear how her donation goes, and she plans to share her experience with us when she is done.
I would like to encourage all of you to participate in your own SIMPLE Service Project. You can view all of the photos regarding my shopping and donation, in my Google+ Album. Be sure to check out the GE Energy Smart Challenge as well.
After I came home from doing my shopping, I decided to try out the free online GE Energy Savings Calculator. It’s so easy to use! You search by the type of light bulbs you are replacing your current ones with. Then you type in the number of bulbs you are replacing, and it gives you an estimate of how much money you will save per year, I chose to go with an e11 bulb!

How awesome!
We changed all of our bulbs over when we moved into our house 3 years ago. The only thing to remember is that CFLs can’t go in the trash.

Important thing to remember – I nearly forgot! Luckily you don’t have to swap them often!
